Alpha Shelving System

1994

A self-structuring folded aluminium shelf, with wood-edged laminate ends.

Timeline

This project began with the idea of making the shelf as an aluminium extrusion, with a profile which would brace the vertical ends of the book shelf and do away with the need for cross bracing the overall structure. One of the prototypes was made from folded aluminium sheet, which surprisingly provided enough stability. We decided to simplify the production, reduce the cost and, in the end, to improve the appearance by keeping the idea of a folded, anodised sheet aluminium shelf. Later on we adapted the shelf for use as a wall-mounted system, held to a track by an aluminium casting which also served as a bookend.
