Cork Chair

2007

A chair made from precision-milled blocks of recycled wine-bottle cork.

Timeline

When Vitra decided to embark on a second run of their 1986 edition project, I had an idea to make a chair out of the same cork block material we’d used for the Cork Family of small tables in the Vitra Home collection. I sent the sketch to Rolf Fehlbaum with an explanation that it seemed to me to be a shape which might have been made by Inuit Eskimos. The chair is extremely comfortable and it was from the shape of the upper sitting surface that we began to develop the HAL chair a year later.
