Atlas System

1992

A system of tables and seating made of swaged steel tubes, aluminium or laminate tops, and cast-aluminium bases.

Timeline

Sitting in a café in Vienna one sunny morning I noticed a beautiful table. I put my glasses on to get a better look at it and realised that the shadow of the table top on the leg was creating the effect of the leg appearing thicker at the top than the bottom. It was an illusion caused by the light. That’s how the idea of the leg was born. Alias found a machine which had been developed for making wind surfing masts, and we tested bonding laminate to aluminium sheet to create the table tops. The system quickly grew to include a full range of tables, trolleys, stools and chairs.
