I first went to Japan in 1982. A friend of a friend was recruiting for a fashion show in Tokyo and looking for non-professional models. The air fair and hotel were paid for, and with the £300 fee I bought a 35mm camera and photographed some of the Buddhist temples and shrines I visited. Later I made a book out of the photos as part of my application to the Royal College of Art.
