Apartment in Kensington

1985–86

Project after graduation

Timeline

Jasper made sketches and lists for the apartment in a series of red notebooks like this one.

After graduation from the Royal College, Jasper’s first big commission was to design interiors and furniture for Nicholas Ward-Jackson’s apartment in Egerton Gardens. He was responsible for designing and manufacturing pieces, selecting fixtures and fittings, and overseeing the redecorating.

For the apartment he designed a door handle, one-legged table, console table, dining chair, daybed and coat stand, all of which went on to be produced commercially at some point in the following years. The sketch above shows the kitchen. While work progressed on the apartment, Jasper used one of its rooms as his studio. In 1986, he kept his notes, to-do lists and sketches about the project in a series of red notebooks. He made lists of hardware to buy from the long-standing supplier Oakdens, using their catalogue, and went back and forth to the shop on Curtain Road to make his purchases.

Below is a list made in March 1986 of the pieces to be made for each room in the apartment, with expected due dates. He had finished the bulk of work on the apartment by summer 1986.

The photographs below show a bookshelf that Jasper designed for the apartment as well as the door handle (produced by FSB in 1989), coat stand (sold by Aram from 1987) and console table (produced by SCP from 1986). Taken by David Cripps, these pictures were among those showing Jasper’s work in The New Furniture by Peter Dormer (Thames & Hudson, 1987).
